i got in contact with these guys a few years back. Exchanged a few emails with the former head instructor of that branch of Wahnam. He seemed like a nice guy but the school seemed a little pricey for me back then...i was stoney broke! Also got the impression that the fees were to pay for the instructor's trips to Malayasia for further instruction. Fair enough i guess, but i didn't sit well with me. Why should i pay for someone elses' instruction when i can get the instruction myself. (I was getting sick of the drizzle in scotland and dreaming of warmer weather myself) But that is just me.

No idea what their gongfu is like (Scotland branch or Wahnam as a whole)...bit had to tell from the clip. But good to see they are at least teaching combat orientated shaolin.

Yes, good that they try. Just a shame they tend to view themselves as sole Shaolin heirs and anyone with a different training method/paradym to them 'doesn't understand internal force' huh.gif grin.gif .
(If you don't believe me check out their forum)

I had a strange encounter with them a few years ago - had been chatting to them on their forum and it was quite amicable, but we didn't agree on a variety of different things (takedowns, internal force, fake taiji, the form is how you fight). Then I got hit with a bunch of sparring challenges at once from their taiji and shaolin guys after they had had a weekend retreat, which I chose not to go for as it wasn't coming in the spirit of anything except "you have offended me, my master and the shaolin temple" (they wanted to video it and publish online etc - not my thing at all). It was clear that whatever I did was going to be judged as "not taiji" if I won, and if I lost then it would be "your taiji is weak old man". I think the image of a long procession of Wahnam students waiting to spar me one after the other kind of did for me. I chose to walk away. Which i think is all they were really interested in anyway - I don't really blame them for not wanting people trying to discredit their system on their forum.

That said - one of their guys came to one of my classes and we had a drink and a chat afterwards - he was a sound guy. Quite a few of them were actually pretty nice and friendly when messaging privately - but on the forum there was a really strange atmosphere. Ultimately they all do their thing and they have a sense of protecting their own school. I decided to leave them to it, life's too short to give a shit about what another school is doing.

The only thing I've heard about them is that they are very, very expensive....

That is some weird shit, spot lighting a member like that, because he does not follow the norm.

Ba Gua monk is a member of EF, right? I am not too sure if we have spoken before.

on further reading the attitude presented by the "Sifus" towards any outsider presenting a balanced view (all of whom have since been banned-"to protect new students"....WTF!) ...well the attitude is "Fundie" in the extreme...I hope the attitude doesn't reflect the organization... rolleyes.gif

I'd say this was BTDT unless you're gonna discuss the video itself...

Yeah i though Bagua monk was a member here also...manybe not the same guy though...who knows.

Anyhoo re the above clip i can't comment on if it is good bad or indifferent as i'm no shaolin guy and don't want to be but i did find some taijiquan stuff they do. Which i though would be more relevent to an IMA forum.

There doesn't seem to be any internal closing or opening there, equally importantly realxation of the hips and no turning. If you don't undertand the importance of turning (every body part) in IMA then you are not doing IMA. IMHO

their legs appear to finish moving before their upper body, or not at all (as with their cloud hands). it seems they lack an understanding of empty and full when it comes to weight transfer.

not my cup of tea.

I think we have had two Bagua Monks. The first fled the forum after Asura found BM's Yahoo space that showed him in boxers and suggestive poses.
