If you didn't try moderating, you don't know what it means. Too much moderation and you lose diversity and interest. Too little and you get kids destroying the place and its credibility. Have you seen any of this here? Not so far, and I hope it stays this way.

Most of the crap here is internal. A bunch of FULLY GROWN MEN who squabble like a pack of old ladies.
Brian, Marin, Bruce, Shawn et al.
Nobody cares about your problems.
If you don't like each other, don't talk to each other
If you don't like each other, don't talk to each other
Or have a conference chat. I don't care. Just sort your problems out like adults for once.

Old ladies are much more civil. They've seen too much of life to let the small stuff get to them. It's more a bunch of FULLY GROWN MEN squabbling like 3rd-grade boys on the playground.

plus he's put a great deal of time in--and has ESP about trolls.
i think the amount of trust and respect that he's won among the denizens of this board is remarkable.
i think this is partly because, as passionate and involved as he is in his art, he has no ax to grind, and
treats people, experienced or newb, with respect. as long as they aren't here to troll.
best to all...
ps: i would have posted this on one of the more pertinent threads, but they seem to be locked.

Dude, if you're really serious about getting banned, just change your name to Zac and voila! Instant banning (temporary only, though).
I think it's high time that Zac got banned again. What say you all?

I really don't understand what's so evil about the ignoring list, or the simple act of not responding to things that annoys us. Isn't that what we do in the real life? if what someone says feel true, interesting to us, we listen to it more. We talk to that person more. If we think it's wrong, boring, or the person annoys us, we turn away and ignore that person. We are under no moral or ethical obligation to devote our very limited time continuing listening, reading, or talking to that person.
Everyone is entitled to their opinions, but not our time (if they want us to listen to them, they have to give us reasons to do so). In the real world, no one is branded intolerant for this. That's a classic example of free market for ideas. Our ideas lives or dies based on its own merit, as collectively judged by the people.
Isn't it ironic that people who rail against "political correctness" equate ignoring opinions in this reasonable, real-world manner as being intolerant (are there worse crimes in "political correctness"?). Similarly, some who hold themselves to be defenders of modern conservative ideals are opposed to this type of free, open discussion. Those who accuse others of disrespect starts threads that says "you suck, now tell me why". And those who pride themselves as being part of democratic society don't want to practice it in a discussion forum. Newbies, they say, should show deference and not talk so much, they should know their place and listen to their elders, whose opinions matters more. Well, who decides who are the worthies? Me, you, a small group of old timers at EF?
If something is true, it doesn't matter who says it right? Same for when something is wrong.
So let's keep it simple and let this forum be like the real world: if someone is really annoying or plain wrong, ignore him. Don't feed the troll. Sooner or later he's going to get the message. And if he doesn't, and his continuing presence on the board intimidates, discourages, and disrupts this free exchange of ideas, the mods can alway ban him.
Of course there are people who are too narrow-minded, who ignores so much that they are actually ignorant. That's their loss. But there's no mechanism we can institute that can forcibly change that is there?

By the same token, the idea that simply leaving people to their own devices will convince to stop anything or change, is inherently unrealistic. Firstly, this underestimates the persistence of some people and their needs, and second, they will never really be left to themselves. Always, someone will support them and continue to give them attention, such that this equation will never even exist.
If anyone wants to have standards, it's going to require a more hands on approach than that. That is my opinion.
That's all well and good, Marin, but anyone who wants to see the type of fiasco you, Brian, Shawn, Bruce et al. engage in on a near monthly basis can head over to Shawn's paochui thread and decide whether that shit is worth it or not.
I mean you're all stand up guys, but when you get together... it's truly pathetic.

The high horses in the WTF thread are really fucking tired. As far as noobs disrespecting their "seniors," that's a bunch of bullshit. This is not a school with seniors and juniors in clear relation. I don't need a moderator to tell me whose opinion to take seriously and whose to take with a huge grain of salt. Some noobs have been great members right away, some not. Same with the old guard. If you can't bear to have a noob disagreeing with you, then I would suggest you're not all that secure in yourself. You think people can't see who is talking out their ass? You need a moderator to reinforce your position of authority? I completely, completely disagree. As has been said before by others, this isn't a school, it's a pub. And it's the best MA pub on the Internet, thanks in very large part to Felipe.
Well, good luck to the new mods. Looks like a good group of people.
