Going to be studying abroad in Kunming from May 27th, 2008 to late April 2009. Anybody know of Sanda/Sanshou teachers in the area? While I'm at it, anybody know of any tongbei teachers in the area as well?

Watch out for the food, everything's swimming in lard. My dad got a stroke after too much of that food.

Sha Junjie is running a Wushu school in Kunming, where he teaches traditional IMA and modern Sanda. I can get you the detailed address when I am back at my place next week.

Best regards

Hi,

I'm also in Northwest Kunming.

I'm getting ready to start studying with this guy at Yunnan University this month, and could meet you up there.

Also, my gf's dad is the Judo coach at the stadium here, and he and the uncles know some type of "hometown" wrestling system that my gf's grandfather was a champion of, so I'm going to look into that a bit more and try to get some of that stuff together, as well.

sounds like you've got some good connections too! Do you/have you studied judo before? should definitely try meeting up, always good to meet fellow martial artists!

Yeah I'm always up for meeting anyone.

I'm a huge mess of "dont' F with it" at 6'4" and probably close to 270lbs, but I'm definitely a novice martial artist, and I don't front about that.

But I"ve done a bit. I've lived in Asia all my adult life, so I've done some Muay Thai in Thailand, a bit of Taekkhyun in Korea, some stick stuff, as well as a bit of Tai Chi.

My gf's dad is the judo coach at the stadium here, but I'm going to learn shuai xiao from him, and do Chen Tai Chi with the teacher at Yunnan University, and maybe if I have time some sanda stuff . . . .

I'll probably take the next 2 months to really get back into shape (I'm not at all, now) because I did a tiny bit of Judo when I was a kid, and I remember puking during the first class!

Anyway - let me know when you get here. I'm a mellow guy and my crazy is good crazy, as far as alot of expats go. smiley.gif

how long have you been living in China for? i'm a novice as well, i've done a lot of dabbling here and there but i've found it hard to stick to one style (due to focusing on school and lack of quality teaching). I"m considering making a trip to Thailand for Muay Thai, any place in particular that you'd recommend?

As far as I know they teach Bagua, Tongbei, Xingyi, Taiji and modern Sanda there.
Do you speak Chinese? Their English is not really good. I don't know if they have sb. there who speaks some English.
I'll post you the phone number via PN.

If someone who at the beginner or novice level, then maybe learn Tiaji, and other internal kungfu will be much better, like WUDANG KUNGFU, that's the best form for a learner to learn, for that's need less strength at the begining level.

But the effects really good after you practice, and if have enough time, maybe Wudang Mountain in Hubei province will be a optional.

And if interested in real kungfu like taiji, bagua, xingyi, etc, please visit www.daoistkungfu.com , you'll get what you want, and there has the videoes which can show you the real kungfu,

and at that trainingschool, have special learner who could speak English fluently.

The best way to improve CHinese is to speak with Chinese people. I am sure you will pick up quickly as soon as you are in China.
I don't know how much they charge. Won't be a fortune though. I'll try to find out.
Actually, I think Sha Junjie won several national titles in Sanda.

@ Wangdawei

sorry, took me a while to reply. My teacher doesn't know how much they charge exactly. He is sure though that you will be charged at local rates when you stay for a longer period. As incomes and costs in Yunnan are very low compared to American standards, you should not have a problem to afford this, if you can afford going there in the first place. He also mentioned that they had all kinds of international longer-term guests there in the past, so you shouldn't have a problem to get along with non-perfect Chinese skills. wink.gif

Let us know how it went after you settled down. I hope I'll make it to Kunming this summer, but I fear time won't allow (again).

They do, his name is Zhaoping Ji, if you do meet with them you are in for a treat.

You can see Sha Guozheng on You Tube, I have trained with them and have some videos of his son and daughter-in-law doing two man sets of Baqua, Xingyi, and Taiji. I do not know if they teach Tongbei, but, Zhoaping Ji knows the form.

Good Luck,

Martin.

Sha Jingjie won gold in Xing Yi at national level in 1981 and 1983.

In San Da between 1986 and 1989 at National level he got silver twice at 48 kilos, and bronze at 52 kilo once.

I've just sent a message to another teacher in Kumning, and if it's O.K. with him I'll send you his e-mail.
