I came across this interview from some Uechi-Ryu guys. I found it a little offensive.

It basically says Kungfu people can not fight. With all due respect to a few long time Martial Artists, I think they have a limited knowledge of Chinese Martial Arts.

But what do you guys think?

Yeah - pretty much just willful ego-centric ignorance yet again.

Cung Le started doing kungFu/sunDar and most MMA guys said he would not last at UFC.

This is just another example of us vs. them mentality like any group, club, religion etc. Anyone on the outside must be diminished to empower those on the inside. It's beyond BTDT and is just tiresome.

one form per style? headbang.gif thats crazy in YSB there are 56 "forms" per animal and there are 8 animals. The only style I can think of that only has one form is Taiji, but wait theres the 108 posture form or the 48 posture is it? I've seen a "snake" Taiji form as well come to think of it, and my exposure to Taiji is limited. Kung Fu can't be used to fight? so Bruce Lee couldn't fight? I heard the marines had He Jinbao visit them and show them some stuff. Not that they didn't know some hand to hand before. but doesn't that say something about kung fu? the marines respect it and I'm sure they wouldn't talk shit about the marines. people with such low IQ's should open their mouths much less. I won't even waist my time reading that article now.

I won't be so egotistic as to say that the system or whatever home made combo of systems they use don't work but I will say that when you train to fight with rules you will not be ready for those who will break your rules the first chance they get. cry.gif

while much of what was said in this piece was bollocks, I do tend to agree with some of what hew says. Many people who train in KF are not very good at transferring their skills into fighting/sparring.

Why be offended by what they think? does not matter, what does matter is whether it makes you look at what you do honestly.

I agree, Mut. Also, I would venture to say that most hobbyists who do traditional martial arts can't fight their way out of a paper bag.

I think they may have an edge against untrained people, but against a combat sport competitor? Nah.

Hi Ian,

I think it is a little unfair to compare a TMA 'hobbiest' with a competitive sports fighter. Sports fighters generally train far more than your average hobbiest would. But if you compared a sports fighter with a TMA guy who trains more or less an equal amount of time then..... well then you would generally find the same result. Many TMA utilize methods that need a little tweaking (only a little) for instance often you find 2 people training using the same system... i.e defend a straight punch... one guy attacks with a classical reverse punch or variation other guy does what ever it is they do. Change the feed to a more common sort of straight punch.... jab or cross, make sure the punch is in distance (not always fast) so that if the 'practitioner' stuffs up he will be hit in the face (or whatever target) this reinforces that what has just happened on his part is wrong. Many places train with the punch missing even if the 'practitioner' got it wrong so the instant feedback of 'oh shit WRONG' does not register, hence re-enforcing to the unconscious mind that the incorrect tech is in fact correct.... 'hey I did not get hit'= i got it right.

Often it is only some of the details of how you train that makes a difference on how applicable you are.

Hey, I agree. But the fact is that very few people who do TMA train much or that hard. That was kind of my point. Also, another equally important aspect missing from old TMA is the lack of full tilt sparring. Recent developments (as in the last several centuries to now) have allowed people to practice in ways not safe before. Boxing gloves, kendo bogu and shinai, judo's randori rules, etc...

Sorry Ian.... the second part of my post was not directed at you, though it is hard to tell from the way I set it out. We are in agreement, though I am not a fan of boxing gloves, very much a hindrance for a style like mine which uses a lot of palms and also relies on openhand contact..... give MMA gloves instead.... and for some headgear...

Though truth be told we don't free spar as such often. We tend to have one person open feeding (kickboxing) and the other doing the kung fu.... so to speak....

I don't like using gloves either. But I really appreciated my opponent wearing them when I took boxing and went against people who were way better than me!

grin.gif yup, still I rather eat some with the 4 ounce gloves on, I have not sparred someone that much better than me while standing for a long time.... If I have big gloves on then they are much better than me with 4 ounce ones they may be marginally only so we both hurt...

Old CMA saying said, "If you don't spar or wrestle for 3 days then your arms and legs are no longer be yours." This is why we try to spar and wrestle as much as possible. But sometime it's just so difficult to find partners to meet our 3 days requirement.

What's your solution on this?

i wish my brother does SC.....

my brother in law (still in colledge) is very strong, everyTime i visit denver i wrestle him.
he can bench around 320# and he is only 145#.
he peaked his lifting already.
according to him if he does not maintain the same weight to lift in 3 days he also need to rebuilt up to his max.
